Is stress harmful to your health? If so, how and why? Is there such a thing as “good stress”? How exactly does stress affect your ability to do even simple tasks at work, home or school? Regular stress reducing activities can improve health right down to our DNA. A collaborative investigation by members of the Benson-Henry Institute for Mind/Body Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and the Genomics Center at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center published in the Public Library of Science reported that eliciting the relaxation response – a physiologic state of deep rest attained through meditation – influences the activation patterns of genes associated with the body’s response to stress.

                                                                                     

Stress Facts:                      

  1. -A 20-year study conducted by the University of London concluded that unmanaged reactions to stress were a more dangerous risk factor for cancer and heart disease than either cigarette smoking or high cholesterol foods.

  2. -Up to 75% of time lost in the workplace is stress related. The cost to US industry is estimated at $300 billion a year.

  3. -TIME Magazine reported that in the month after 9/11, incidents of dangerous heart rhythms in cardiac patients in the New York City area more than doubled.

  4. -The National Institutes of Health estimates as many as 1 in 5 Americans suffer from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Stress clearly plays a major role in this disorder.

  5. -An article in the October 9, 2007 issue of the “Journal of the American Medical Association” reported that first time heart attack patients returning to a chronically stressful workplace were twice as likely to have a second attack compared to patients who found their work relatively stress free.
